Sons of Confederate Veterans' Mississippi division pushing for license plates honoring former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard and Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Mississippi is in the news again. This time a fight is brewing over a proposal to issue specialty license plates honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was a Grand Wizard in the Ku Klux Klan. Guess who's behind this push for the license plates? Sons of Confederate Veterans -- the Mississippi division. Seriously? And who in their right mind would allow this to happen? Wouldn't this be a slap to the civil rights movement and all the blacks who were beaten and lynched by the KKK? Wow, talk about hubris!
The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which it calls the "War Between the States." The group proposes a different design each year between now and 2015, with Forrest slated for 2014.
Forrest, a Tennessee native, is revered by some as a military genius and reviled by others for leading the 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tenn. Forrest was a Klan grand wizard in Tennessee after the war. Source: AJC
I would love to see Gov. Haley Barbour get the gumption to run for the presidency, coming from a state where racist demons still rear their ugly heads. I think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers just sat up in their graves at the nerve of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
