Michelle Obama to Give Speech as Part of "Let's Move" Campaign at Predominantly White North Point Community Church in Alpharetta

First Lady Michelle Obama to speak at predominantly white North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, commenter on church online chat calls husband a Socialist & says she has no right to speak there.

First Lady Michelle Obama is coming to Atlanta Wednesday to celebrate the one year anniversary of her Let's Move campaign to reduce childhood obesity. Mrs. Obama will visit Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta at 1 p.m. and will give a speech at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta at 4 p.m. I want to focus on the North Point speech. I am a proud member at North Point Community Church and it sucks that I won't be able to be a part of this historic occasion at the church. After last Sunday's sermon, I participated in an online chat to basically converse with others who watched the service remotely, as I did. Most people were very receptive to the First Lady's impending visit and were planning on getting tickets. There was one person who took offense to her coming. He said the church wasn't the place for "telling people what to eat." He also said her husband was a "Socialist" and he was appalled that North Point could even entertain the thought of having her there.

Well, her campaign is no different from Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No to Drugs," or Hillary Clinton's push for universal health care. It should also be noted that the church has always played a role in politics and change. A prime example is the civil rights movement that basically started in a church, with black pastors saying enough was enough and engaging their members to stand up and fight. It should also be noted that many churches are playing a role in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and are having many workshops, conferences and so on. Take Coral Ridge Ministries, for example, they have led the charge in calling President Barack Obama a Socialist, among other things. North Point Community Church Pastor Andy Stanley's father Charles Stanley made some controversial statements last July 4th that America was heading for Socialism. Another pastor interjecting himself in the political landscape but this commenter didn't seem to have a problem with the vile and hateful rhetoric the senior Stanley spewed against President Obama.

Here's the crux of the Michelle Obama coming to North Point Community Church -- it's a problem to racist people. Pastor Andy Stanley had to spend a few minutes explaining to those narrow-minded people that the White House called North Point and he asked his team if they had any issues with Mrs. Obama coming to speak at the church. They had none, so the church accepted the request. Stanley had to even state that his current sermon, Big Church, which talked about the role of the church in other areas, not just preaching the gospel, and had to explain, the sermon had already been prepared three weeks before the White House called with that request. He was talking to people like that commenter on the North Point Online chat session.

This commenter, like all the other people at North Point who have a problem with Michelle Obama coming to speak there, are haters and racists. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her coming. I didn't hear this mumbling when Pastor Stanley was asked to take part in the Prayer Service after President Obama's inauguration. They should be honored that the First Lady is coming to North Point Community Church. I am surprised there hasn't been any rumbling of why she's coming to a church in a predominantly white and affluent community. I guess no matter how hard you try, you will always have haters. The speech will be carried live on www.letsmove.gov. To that commenter, who was too chicken to reveal his name, eat your heart out. You can't stop Mrs. O and her husband is still your president. Hah.
