Federal Judge John M. Roll Killed in Arizona Attack Outside Tuscon Safeway Grocery Store

Federal judge John M. Roll, is among the people fatally shot outside Safeway grocery store in Tucson.

Federal judge John M. Roll was shot and killed outside a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, AZ. Five others were killed and 12 wounded at a political event held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who is listed in critical condition after being shot in the head at point blank range by a white male, who is in police custody. Roll was appointed by former President George H. W. Bush in 1991.

Roll was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1969. He received a J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1972. He received an LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990. He was a Bailiff, Pima County Superior Court from 1972 to 1973. He was an Assistant city attorney of Tucson, Arizona in 1973. He was a Deputy county attorney of Criminal Division, Pima County, Arizona from 1973 to 1980.

He was a Clinical instructor, University of Arizona College of Law from 1978 to 1979. He was an assistant U.S. Attorney of the District of Arizona from 1980 to 1987. He was an Organized crime drug task force from 1982 to 1986. He was a Civil division from 1986 to 1987. He was a judge on the Court of Appeals, Division Two, State of Arizona from 1987 to 1991. He was a Presiding judge from 1988 to 1991. He was a Vice-chief judge in 1991. He was a judge on the Pima County Superior Court, Criminal Bench in 1991.

Roll was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. Roll was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on September 23, 1991, to a seat vacated by Alfred C. Marquez. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on November 22, 1991, and received his commission on November 25, 1991. He served as chief judge from 2006-present. Source
