Nova Southeastern University professor Joseph Morrissey was stabbed to death last Tuesday, during what police have characterized as a home-invasion robbery. Randy Tundidor Sr., a Plantation, Fla., businessman, who had been renting a house from Morrissey was arrested Friday and charged with murder. According to the Miami Herald, he has also been charged with kidnapping, robbery and arson. His son, Randy Tundidor Jr., who has been a "person of interest" in the stabbing death, is being held in jail for violation of his probation.

Morrissey, 46, who was an assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the university, died during what police believe was a home-invasion robbery. The assailant, who tied up both Morrissey and his wife, Linda, torched the kitchen before fleeing, splashing gasoline to accelerate the burn. Police say an intruder got into the couple's home in the 600 block of Northwest 75th Terrace after midnight Tuesday, abducted the couple, and forced them to drive to an ATM and withdraw money.

The robber, who had a gun, and the couple then went back to the home, where the assailant killed Morrissey. Initial reports indicated that Morrissey had been shot, and witnessed reported hearing gunshots, but the Broward Medical Examiner found multiple stab wounds. Linda Morrissey escaped with the couple's 5-year-old son and later led firefighters to her husband's body on a patio outside the kitchen. Police have not discussed a possible motive in the slaying and could not be reached for comment on Friday night. Source: Miami Herald
Randy Tundidor Sr. is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday morning on charges. According to the Palm Beach Post, Tundidor considered a civil suit against Morrissey earlier this year because of disrepair at the town-home, which resulted in him falling and severely injuring his leg, his attorney Joseph Pappacoda said. A funeral for Morrissey will be at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Parish in Plantation on Wednesday. I am sure the students and faculty at Nova Southeastern University share my sentiments that Mr. Morrissey will be missed. The academic community has lost a true champion!
