Conservatives Enraged at the Census Bureau for Counting Gay Couples Regardless of State Laws

Conservatives blast the U.S. Census Bureau over its decision to count same sex couples regardless of whether their marriages are legal in their respective states.

The U.S. Census Bureau's decision to count gay couples has riled some conservatives. The Census Bureau has boosted its efforts of reaching out to the LGBT community, by assuring gays and transgender people that they can be "true" to who they are when filling out census forms. For the first time, they will be counted as married even if their relationships are not recognized in their state. Er, isn't that like putting the cart before the horse? For those states that haven't legalized same sex marriage, what the Census Bureau is doing is deliberately ignoring the law by allowing same sex couples to list themselves as married.

On Monday, the Census Bureau released new videos encouraging same-sex couples and transgender people to participate in the 2010 census. Gay rights groups have hailed the bureau's move as historic, as it signals recognition of gay and lesbian marriages."We pushed hard to make it possible for married same-sex couples to be counted in the 2010 census," reads a statement by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

The organization launched a "Queer the Census" campaign demanding even more recognition in the next U.S. census, complete with a question that asks if one is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Source: Christian Post
Don't get me wrong, if the state has legalized same sex marriage, then the couples should be counted as such. The Census Bureau should not circumvent the law. It needs to uphold the law and not further its own agenda.
