Shawn Tyson, 16, charged with murders of two British tourists James Cooper & James Kouzaris, in Sarasota, Fla.
Sarasota police have launched an investigation into the murders of two British tourists -- James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, -- whose bodies were found in Newtown, a rundown section of the town, in the wee hours Saturday morning. Shawn Tyson, 16, has been charged with the murders of the two friends. It seems highly suspect as to why these two men were in such a section of the town, known for gang activity. According to the Daily Mail, the two men were staying in the upscale city of Longboat Key. Were they led to this area to purchase drugs or were their bodies taken from another area and dumped here?
Officers found the first body surrounded by up to 20 shell casings before discovering the second victim 50 feet away in the early hours of Saturday morning. Local residents had reported what they thought was 'machine gun fire'. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
Police in Sarasota said neither of the men were in possession of drugs, but would not say whether they had cash or weapons. The area is a known hotspot for gangs.
Captain Paul Sutton, of Sarasota Police, said: 'This is an area where not many tourists venture. We are still trying to ascertain why they were there.' 'It is a residential neighbourhood with no shops and no bars. We do not know what brought them here at 3am.'
A spokesman for the British consulate in Miami said: 'British consular officials can confirm that two British nationals were killed in Sarasota, Florida, on April 16. Next of kin have been notified. Source: Daily Mail
I don't know the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these two promising young men, but tourists need to learn that they must watch their backs and the company they keep when they visit other countries. You can't be too trusting and you can't venture into unknown areas.
