It is unconscionable that Juan Carlos Rivera, 17, lost his life at Coral Gables Senior High School this morning. He was stabbed to death by another student, who is now in police custody and I sincerely hope that the judge will deny bond in this case. Rivera had just started his sophomore year at the school. No one deserves this and the school will be blamed for not having metal detectors in place.
I remember as a child, the last thing you would want to do is to get into a fight, much less to bring knives and guns to school. The stabbing reportedly occurred after an "altercation" between the boys and it escalated into a fight, with the young thug stabbing the victim to death, with what is being reported as a box cutter. According to the Miami Herald, the fight was over a girl, who must feel like crap right now. An eyewitness said the victim was stabbed three times -- once in the chest, once in the collarbone and once by the kidney.
Of course, all hell broke loose as the news of the stabbing began to spread. Parents flocked to the school to get their children. Something went terribly wrong at the school today and it seems that as a society, we are becoming more violent and decorum has flown through the window. No-one seems to care anymore. This is a tragedy and the student's life was lost senselessly. The accused has done irreparable damage to his life and he does not deserve to be given bail. He deliberately took this young man's life and for what? Neither teenager will get the girl they were fighting over. Shameful, simply shameful.
