The Schulers (NY Post)Diane Schuler, the Long Island mother who was behind the wheel in a horrific wrong-way crash along the Taconic State Parkway in Briarcliff Manor, was drunk on vodka and had high levels of marijuana in her system. This deadly mix led to her death, plus the untimely demise of seven others. The findings were part of the toxicology report conducted by the Westchester County Medical Examiner on Schuler, 36, after the deadly crash that occurred on July 26.
According to the report, Schuler's blood-alcohol level was a eye-popping .19 -- nearly 2½ times the legal limit of .08. This woman was loaded and was a ticking time bomb. The police said that another six grams of alcohol was found in Schuler's stomach that had yet to enter her bloodstream. A bottle of Absolut vodka was reportedly recovered from her car, though the police are not sure what time she started her drinking spree. State police said Schuler smoked marijuana 15 minutes to an hour before the crash. What's horrific is the lack of regard this woman obviously had for the children who were in the vehicle with her -- her two-year old daughter Erin, and three nieces, Emma Hance, 8; Alyson Hance, 7; and Kate Hance, 5 (pictured on the left). Her son Bryan, 5, was the only survivor and is currently hospitalized. She also killed Guy Bastardi, his father Michael and family friend Daniel Longo, when her vehicle collided head-on with the Bastardis Chevrolet Trail Blazer.What Ms. Schuler is accused of is absolutely unconscionable and reckless, to say the least. She has devastated four families beyond words. How can you possibly drive a vehicle in such a mental state and have the nerve to transport children at the same time? Witnesses told investigators that they saw her red car driving erratically and also said that the vehicle was straddling two lanes, tailgating and flashing its red lights. This is a travesty and I am sorry she did not live to be tried for this horrific accident.
