I was appalled to learn that Tammy Bruce, guest host for Laura Ingraham's radio show, unleashed a hateful tirade aimed at First Lady Michelle Obama. Bruce, discussing the first lady's visit to a Washington D.C. classroom last week, incredulously recalled Obama's story about wanting to get A's in school and called out her use of a "weird, fake accent." Could someone please tell me how that comment can be considered weird? Don't most people want to get straight A's in school, even if it's a seemingly insurmountable task? Oh gee, maybe Ms. Bruce set the bar so low for herself that aiming high was a virtual impossibility.
It gets worst. She went on: "That's what he's married to," Bruce said. "...You know what we've got? We've got trash in the White House. Trash is a thing that is colorblind, it can cross all eco-socionomic...categories. You can work on Wall Street, or you can work at the Wal-Mart. Trash, are people who use other people to get things, who patronize others, who consider you bitter and clingy..."
I would have guessed right off that Ms. Bruce would understand what it means for President Obama, an African American to ascend the presidency. After all, isn't she in a so-called minority group herself? A lesbian? Don't get me wrong, I could care less what her sexual orientation is, but the struggles of gays and lesbians are comparable in some sense to the Civil Rights struggles. Come on people, can we all get along and stop the name-calling? Neither President Barack Obama nor his wife Michelle are trash. Since when is aspiring to reach the highest levels in life a crime or reserved just for Caucasians? Since when is an educated and professional black woman a threat to anyone? Unbelievable.
