Another Republican women's group has found itself in hot water over racially charged statements against Barack Obama. This time, Marcia Stirman, chairperson of New Mexico's Otero County Republican women's group, put her both feet in her mouth. She defended a letter to the editor of the Alamogordo Daily News in which she wrote, ''I believe Muslims are our enemies.'' This idiot also called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama ''a Muslim socialist.''
According to the Alamogordo Daily News, a national Islamic group expressed outrage over Stirman's letter and called on state and national Republican Party officials to repudiate the publication of ''anti-Muslim comments.'' ''Because these hate-filled remarks were made by a prominent Republican, it is incumbent on state and national GOP officials to repudiate her divisive and intolerant views,'' said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The letter ran Tuesday in the Alamogordo Daily News. It was titled ''Why I'm a Republican'' and listed 16 reasons for her party affiliation. The list ends with Stirman saying Obama is ''a Muslim socialist.'' She also wrote, ''I believe war is a fact of life and we should always win.''
Stirman said the letter included support from all over the country. She wrote it after the newspaper recently published another reader's letter titled ''Why I'm a Democrat.'' She continued to show her intolerance for diversity. When she was asked for a response to Awad's concerns, she said of Muslims: ''I don't trust them at all. They've sworn across the world that they are our enemies. Why we're trying to elect one is beside me.'' What an idiot!
Stirman said she carefully considered what she wrote in the letter, refused to apologize and defended her right to express her views. ''I still have freedom of speech and an opinion. If the Islamic group doesn't like it, well, I don't like what's going on in their camp, either,'' Stirman said. Well if the NM GOP had any decency, they would have her removed as the group's chairwoman. What an absolutely insulting show of racial intolerance!
Let me just be clear, I do not condone what the Muslim extremists have done. It is deplorable and I do take offense to the way women are treated in the Muslim countries, but let's be fair, Barack Obama is not a Muslim and he should not be labeled as one. What I find insulting is the notion that all Muslims are horrible people. It would be horrible for blacks to say that all whites are racists. That is far from the truth. We are not responsible for the names our parents give us, nor are we responsible for the families in which we are born. So, Ms. Stirman is completely wrong to label this man as such and make a blanket statement about all Muslims. Are all whites racist? No. Most are hardworking, law abiding and decent people. So, too, should the same standard be applied to all people.
