Swine Flu Outbreak

The recent outbreak known as the "Swine Flu" has killed in Mexico and has at least 40 confirmed cases in the United States and rising. Fourteen high schools in New York have shut down due to one student being confirmed has having symptoms of the recent outbreak.

President Obama says the Swine flu outbreak is no cause for alarm. Stock trading is down and believed to be a result of the Swine flu outbreak. Oil prices drop 5% due to concerns of a possible outbreak. Dr. Richard Besser, the Acting Director of the C.D.C. says that 11 million doses of anti-viral drugs from a government stockpile has been sent out to states with confirmed cases including New York, Texas and California.

Some organizations are concerned that the name "swine" flu may cause people to think you get the flu from eating pork. This actual strain of virus is a respiratory disease found in pigs and has spread by humans handling infected pigs.

As the world braces to stop or slow the spread of this virus, everyone is being reminded to wash their hands and not to bog down emergency facilities unless truly necessary. These precautionary measures are in place due to the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 which killed 50 million people world wide.
