Arizona Deputy Louie Puroll Shot, Illegal Immigrant Suspected

Pinal County Deputy Louie Puroll was shot while patrolling alone Friday afternoon in a rugged area near Interstate 8, about 50 miles south of Phoenix. He was shot after he came upon a band of suspected marijuana smugglers, the police said. At least one of five suspects opened fire on Puroll and shot him just above his left kidney, Sheriff Lt. Tamatha Villar said. Thankfully, the wound was not serious and he was released from Casa Grande Regional Medical Center Friday night.

The incident sheds light on the immigration debate and legislation that was recently signed by Gov. Jan Brewer. It will, undoubtedly add fuel to the fiery national debate that has sparked widespread protests across the country. The backlash will continue, as civil rights activists and others are calling for a boycott of the state. As of Saturday morning, no arrests have been made and the search for the suspects will continue throughout the day.
