Ex-Yankee Slugger Jim Leyritz Arrested for Domestic Battery on Ex-Wife, Karrie Leyritz

Former New York Yankee player Jim Leyritz was arrested early Thursday on charges of beating up his ex-wife, Karrie Leyritz. He reportedly went ballistic and dragged her out of bed and punched her twice because she had written a check without his permission. Dang, all that over a check? According to the police, she fled to a neighbor's house and called 911. The cops reportedly found her bleeding from a cut above one cheek. When arrested, Leyritz claimed his ex-wife was drunk and hurt herself to frame him.

He also claimed that Karrie Leyritz was angry because he had tried to evict her from the house they still share. Wait, there's more drama. According to the Sun-Sentinel, when the cops questioned their three children, one told the police that his mother was drunk and most likely hit herself. Domestic violence is a serious problem and should not be taken lightly. At the same time, I hope this woman would not stoop so low as to injury herself and blame her husband.

This latest legal headache comes two months before Leyritz is to stand trial on charges of causing a fatal crash while driving drunk in December 2007. In a May interview with the Miami Herald, Leyritz said he's tormented by the accusations he killed Fredia Ann Veitch. He has insisted that he wasn't a drunk. Leyritz must take periodic drug tests and breathe into a Breathalyzer to start his car because he has been accused of drunk driving. He was briefly in a psych ward this year after friends called cops to say he sounded distraught.

It seems to me that this "dynamic duo" aren't setting a good example for their kids. A child should be put in such a position as to finger his mother and say she has a drinking problem.
