The feds have scored big this morning in New Jersey. FBI agents are casting a big net across northern New Jersey and have made multiple arrests in what is being described as a major corruption probe.
WNBC-TV in New York has reported and showed images of the mayors of Hoboken, Peter Cammarano, and Secaucus, Denis Elwell, being taken into FBI headquarters in Newark. The station also showed rabbis being taken into custody.
Radio station New Jersey 101.5 FM reports the sweeps are taking place in Hudson, Bergen, Monmouth and Ocean counties. The stations say the probe centers on money-laundering and political bid rigging.Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Baldini, and Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega were also rounded up by the FBI early Thursday. Authorities said 20 suspects have been arrested and several more were still being sought - primarily in northern New Jersey, a state long known for corruption in politics.
