Animal cruelty keeps popping up in the news. Cheyenne Cherry, 17, was unrepentant after being convicted of stuffing a helpless kitten, Tiger Lily, into a 500-degree oven in May. She was sentenced to a year in prison. What is galling is the fact that she hissed angrily at animal rights activists yesterday as she left court. She said "it's dead, bitch," sticking her tongue out after her plea deal for animal cruelty and attempted burglary at the Bronx Supreme Court. She was charged after she and a 14-year old friend trashed the apartment of her former roommate Valerie Hernandez. They left the kitten to die inside the blistering oven. How barbaric. They should stuff her in an industrial size oven for an hour so she can experience what they did to the kitten.
The pair of miscreants reportedly destroyed furniture and stole DVDs and food. After her arrest, Cherry told police the cat killing was "just a joke." She admitted in court yesterday that the younger girl put the cat in the oven - and "I didn't let the cat out." Authorities said the two girls fled the apartment because they didn't want to hear the dying cat's cries or desperate scratching at the oven door.
The second girl is facing trial in Family Court because of her age. Prosecutor Jennifer Troiano said Cherry was granted a plea deal because her accomplice was "more culpable" for the crimes. According to the NY Daily News, under the agreement, Cherry pleaded guilty to two charges in a six-count indictment. She waived her right to appeal and agreed not to keep a pet for the next three years. Cherry, jailed on a probation violation, faces formal sentencing July 31.
So this girl has entered a life of crime at a young age. Where are her parents and why wasn't she living at home but on her own and sharing an apartment? If this girl doesn't get her act together, she will be imprisoned for a long time if she commits more crimes. She has a penchant for animal cruelty and theft. She was arrested last year for using a BB gun to dog-nap a teacup Yorkie with her boyfriend. She was also arrested for robbing a man of his iPod at gunpoint.
