Martellus Bennett, Dallas Cowboys Tight End, Draws Ire for Stereotypical YouTube Video About "Black Olympics"

My late maternal grandmother always said, "if you have nothing good to say, it's better to just say nothing." This is so appropriate for Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett, who just said he was "just having fun" when he filmed an offensive YouTube video about "Black Olympics." He also reportedly said that he doesn't expect the episode to warrant discipline from the Cowboys. I first learned about this offensive video when Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock let loose on athlete and his brother, Michael, who is a rookie for the Seattle Seahawks. The two men competed eating fried chicken and watermelon and drinking Kool-Aid.

Bennett told the Michael Irvin radio show on Monday that he didn't intend to offend others, but doesn't think the video was racially insensitive. "I don't really think it's offensive," Bennett told Irvin. "It depends on your sense of humor and how you look at things. We were just having fun and it was very funny for me and my brothers, when I look at it I just can't stop laughing. If someone takes offense, I apologize. That wasn't my intention. It was just us having fun."

Bennett told Irvin he would not have a problem with a white person acting out something like the "Black Olympics." There's white comedians that do stuff like that all the time," he said. "I think it's funny to attack stereotypes. It's funny how people just put people in a certain light and say that's what all the people do of a certain race or particular person, so it's fun to attack those stereotypes." Source: USA Today
What you do in the privacy of your own home is your prerogative, but when it is put on YouTube, for example, then it becomes a real problem. The video was offensive and in poor taste. How can we ever expect to be taken seriously as a people when we go around perpetuating the same negative stereotypes that upset us to no end when a white person utters those same offensive words or caricatures us in that manner? Come on. Surely we can do better than this.

Martellus Bennett isn't the only one who should draw anger, his brother is just as complicit in this as he is. For the record, Martellus Bennett is no stranger to a YouTube controversy. The Cowboys already fined Bennett once for releasing a profanity-filled rap video on YouTube, but the fine was later reduced. It's amazing that the Cowboys could come out swinging against him with the profanity-laced video, but remain silent on the stereotypical and offensive video.

Two NYC Fast-Food Joints Change Names to 'Obama Fried Chicken,' Ruffling More than Some Feathers, Walgreen's Pulls Chia Obama's From Shelves

A fool lives in Brooklyn and New York City. You see, two opportunists changed the names of their restaurants to Obama Fried Chicken. Yes, the new name is ruffling more than feathers. The names were prominent on their restaurant awnings. I am surprised this flew under the radar for so long because S&T Fried Chicken on St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem changed its name several weeks ago. Last week Royal Fried Chicken on Rutland Road in Brownsville, Brooklyn did so. They claim they want to pay homage to the nation's first black president. Really? Financial gain is more what I see in their decisions, which, by the way, is ill-advised. Had that been a white establishment naming their restaurant, a chicken joint after the president, all hell would break loose. The bigger issue at hand here is a "do as I say and not as I do" mentality. They are saying that it's okay to perpetuate a negative stereotype because we are black but no-one else dare try.

Sorry, but President Obama's name should not be used in such a manner. When was the last time you pulled up to a George Bush Bar & Grill in Crawford, Texas? I don't care what the owners' intentions were, to use the president's name in such a manner is just plain wrong. They are in it for the money. Besides, aren't there legal implications here? Using his name on a business without his permission? It is distasteful that they would try to profit from such a historic election.

This comes on the heels of the "Chia Obama" being pulled from the shelves of Walgreen's stores. It's simply not worth the headache. Did anyone see a Chia Bush of a Chia Clinton? At what point do we cross the line with likenesses of the president?

Sprehe's Tender, Juicy "Obama Fingers" Hit the Shelves in Germany

Well, Obama chicken fingers have landed in Germany. According to Spiegel Online International, a German frozen food company, Sprehe, hopes to raise sales with a new product: Obama fingers. The tender, fried chicken bits come with a tasty curry sauce. The company says it was unaware of the possible racist overtones of the product.

Never mind the negative drum beats this frozen food may garner from front page publicity. There is a never-ending stream of Obama products and I think some are well-intentioned, while others are just downright racist. I guess the best poster child around today is President Barack Obama.

I guess Sprehe didn't want to miss the boat on cashing in on the likeness of President Obama. The new product is called "Obama Fingers." Fried chicken. How stereotypical. This company runs the risk of being called racially insensitive because we all know the association that has been made about African Americans and fried chicken by some shallow and racist folks.
