Plaxico Burress Pleads Guilty to One Count of Second-Degree Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon, to Get Two Years in Prison

Former New York Giant Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty this morning to one count of second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon. His attorney reached a deal with prosecutors that will send him to prison for two years. He will also be subject to two years post-prison supervision.

The deal, reached between prosecutors in the Manattan District Attorney's Offfice and his lawyer, was the result of negotiations ongoing since his arrest last November. Burress was indicted earlier this month on gun possession charges for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh in a nightclub.

His behavior was reckless and unwarranted. He has no-one to blame for his fate but himself. I hope he has realized the error of his ways and will be given a second chance to play football once he pays his debt to society.

Burress was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. This should be a lesson to all those "ballers" and so-called celebrities who feel that they are above the law. Why in the world did this young man presume to think that he could walk around with an illegal weapon, shoot himself in the thigh, try to cover it up and get away with his actions? He should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Sorry, there should be zero tolerance for his actions.

Burress faces 3 1/2 years to 15 years in prison if he is convicted on a weapons count and he remains free on $100,000 bail. His claim that he did not intend to commit a felony when he shot himself in the thigh with an illegal .40-caliber Glock inside the crowded Latin Quarter nightclub. Right. I am sure every other criminal wouldn't love to utter such a ridiculous statement in the hopes that some fool on the grand jury would believe him or her.

Teammate Antonio Pierce, who was with Burress the night of the shooting was not indicted. Prosecutors said he played a part in hiding the weapon. He told the grand jury that he helped Burress, who was bleeding, and later reportedly returned the gun back to Burress' home in Totowa, N.J. For what it's worth, Antonio Pierce needs to get on his knees and thank God that he was not charged with obstruction.

Walking with no sign of a limp from the bullet wound, Burress stepped out of a black Cadillac Escalade in front of the NYPD's 17th Precinct just after 8 a.m. Wearing dark jeans, a white collared shirt and a black jacket, he stared straight ahead as he walked and ignored shouts from an assembled group of reporters and fans. His lawyer said the wide receiver would be arraigned at 1 p.m. at Central Booking and would plead not guilty to charges of criminal possession of a weapon.

"He's standing tall," said attorney Benjamin Brafman. "He's a mature adult handling this very well, I think, under the circumstances.""He...has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from people who I think understand that he's a fundamentally decent man in a difficult situation," Brafman said.
