Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospitalized After Feeling Faint

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized Thursday after becoming ill in her office at the court. According to a statement issued by the court, Ginsburg was taken to Washington Hospital Center at 7:45 p.m. EDT as a precaution. She had received an iron sucrose infusion at 4:50 p.m. to treat an iron deficiency that had been discovered in July. About an hour later, she "developed lightheadedness and fatigue," the statement said. She was found to have a slightly low blood pressure, which the court said can occur after the type of treatment she received. Although an examination found her to be in stable health, she was given fluids and taken to the hospital as a precaution, the court said.

The July evaluation found "that she was in completely normal health with the exception of a low red blood cell count caused by deficiency of iron. Intravenous iron therapy was administered in a standard fashion," the court statement said. You will recall that Ginsburg underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in February and returned to work surprisingly quick.

Ginsburg, who was nominated by President Bill Clinton, took her seat on the Supreme Court on August 10, 1993. She was a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 1980. Thoughts and prayers go out to the judge and for a speedy recovery!

Actor Patrick Swayze Loses His Battle with Pancreatic Cancer, He Was 57

Actor Patrick Swayze, starred in films such as "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost," lost his battle with pancreatic cancer  Monday. He was 57 years old. His publicist Annett Wolf said, "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months."

Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas. His father was an engineering draftsman; his mother was a ballet dancer and later the director of the Houston Ballet Dance Company. She led her son into the dancing world, which wasn't always easy for a Texas male. Indeed, the young Swayze played football, practiced martial arts and was an accomplished diver and track star while growing up, though he was good enough at dance to earn a college scholarship.

After an early professional job playing Prince Charming in an early '70s version of "Disney on Ice," Swayze returned to Houston, where he met Lisa Niemi, a student of his mother's. The two were married in 1975 and moved to New York to pursue their careers. Source: CNN

It would be great if more people exercised some tact when they open their mouths, but that would be asking way too much from our elected officials. The latest moron to stick his foot in his mouth is U.S. Senator Jim Bunning. He predicted this past weekend that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would likely be dead from pancreatic cancer within nine months. So, now he's the keeper of this woman's life?

During a wide-ranging 30-minute speech on Saturday at the Hardin County Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner, Bunning said he supports conservative judges "and that's going to be in place very shortly because Ruth Bader Ginsburg … has cancer."

"Bad cancer. The kind that you don't get better from," he told a crowd of about 100 at the old State Theater. "Even though she was operated on, usually, nine months is the longest that anybody would live after (being diagnosed) with pancreatic cancer," he said. Source: Kentucky Courier-Journal

Ms. Ginsburg, 75, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this month and surgeons removed a small tumor that had not spread. Doctors termed it a "Stage 1" cancer, meaning they found it in the early stages when it is most curable.

According to the American Cancer Society, people diagnosed with Stage 1 pancreatic cancer have between a 21 and 37 percent chance of living for more than five years with the disease. Only about 20 percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer live for more than a year, but that's because the cancer is difficult to detect and generally is found in later stages. Okay, be that as it may, did he really need to pronounce a death sentence on this woman? Couldn't he had made his point with more tact? I am sure he could have. There is nothing cavalier about having cancer. Out of respect for this woman, her family and the thousands of people in this country dealing with cancer, he should have been a lot more sensitive instead of so callous. If you ask me, from the looks of his picture, Bunning could possibly die before Ms. Ginsburg.

Bad news for the United States Supreme Court justices. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the only woman on the Supreme Court and one of the most consistently strong liberal voices in the United States, had surgery today for pancreatic cancer.

In a statement, the court announced that Ginsburg, 75, underwent surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York for removal of a cancerous tumor from her pancreas. The court said:

Justice Ginsburg had no symptoms prior to the incidental discovery of the lesion during a routine annual check-up in late January at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. A Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) Scan revealed a small tumor, approximately 1 (centimeter) across, in the center of the pancreas. Source: LA Times

He said on 20/20 in an interview with Barbara Walters, that he hasn't let the battle take over his life. "One thing I'm not gonna do is chase staying alive," Swayze told Barbara Walters in his first interview since the diagnosis last year. "You spend so much time chasing staying alive, you won't live." Amen to that! I applaud him for his courageous fight.

According to ABC News, the 56-year-old-actor, beloved for his role in the film "Dirty Dancing," said he and wife Lisa Niemi still find time to dance together. And a few months ago, on the spur of the moment, they decided to renew their vows. The interview took place at his California ranch. He did not have the luxury of surgery because when his cancer was first diagnosed, it had already spread too far. According to the interview, he took part in chemotherapy and a new experimental drug called vatalanib according to the interview. He said that he gives himself two years maximum to live, but with God's grace, he may live longer.
