Congressional Black Caucus Lobbying President Obama to Pick John Thompson as Commerce Secy, Says Clinton Chose More Blacks For Cabinet Than Obama

The Congressional Black Caucus is trying to throw it's virtually nonexistent weight around with President Barack Obama. Well, according to The Hill, is lobbying the president to pick African-American technology executive John Thompson to be his commerce secretary. Thompson is chairman and chief executive officer of Symantec Corp, the software security company best known for its Norton computer protection products. He is expected to step down in early April.

In a letter to Obama, the caucus members stressed that Thompson is the only African-American leading a major technology company. The letter, sent last week and obtained Thursday by The Hill, also lists the seven black Cabinet members chosen by President Clinton during his two terms. Obama has selected four African-Americans for Cabinet positions.

“We commend you for making diversity an important priority as you consider your Cabinet selections, in terms of race, perspectives, party and geography given past progress by other presidents in naming African-Americans to senior Cabinet posts,” said the letter, signed by 38 of the 41 members of the CBC. Boohoo. Barack Obama isn't Bill Clinton. I just can't stand this sense of entitlement that some of us seem to have. I personally don't care with the racial background of a person is, as long as the best person gets the job. I suspect President Obama shares my view. The last time I checked the CBC was a joke and with little achievement to show for social and political issues confronting blacks in this country. If President Obama decides to pick this man for the Commerce Secretary position, it should be a decision made by he and his team, not the Congressional Black Caucus. This amounts to nothing more than strong-arming and trying to dictate to President Obama how to do his job. I have no doubt that Mr. Thompson is qualified for the position, but the decision should come from Barack Obama and not from the CBC and its sense of entitlement.

IMF Repeatedly Told Timothy Geithner That He Owed Social Security, Medicare Taxes

The drama involving Timothy Geithner continues. His nomination as Treasury secretary has been delayed by his past failure to pay taxes and that is a lowdown, dirty shame. He said that it was a mistake, but the International Monetary Fund begs to differ. Apparently, Geithner was repeatedly advised in writing by the IMF that he owed Social Security and Medicare taxes on the income he earned at the organization between 2001 and 2004.

Questions over his initial failure to pay more than $34,000 in taxes are clouding his prospects for confirmation. The Senate Finance Committee postponed Geithner's confirmation hearing for the second time this week on Wednesday. It's now scheduled for next Wednesday, which means President-elect Barack Obama will take office without a Treasury secretary amid the biggest financial crisis in decades.

Here is what I cannot understand. How did Barack Obama's vetting team missed this? Did they think that it wasn't a big deal? If so, that is preposterous. It is a big deal. If this man had to be reminded several times by the IMF about his affairs and he did nothing, he does not need to be at the helm of the Treasury department. Imagine what he would do with our money. Geithner acknowledged in writing that he claimed a child care credit for his kids' summer camp fees. Geez, isn't that cheating? He also didn't pay a 10 percent penalty on early withdrawal from a tax-exempt retirement account. Sounds like cheating to me. Why is it that some rich folks are content on finding ways to cheat the system while the IRS tries to scare poor folks? This is strike two for the Obama team. Governor Bill Richardson decided to decline the nomination for Commerce Secretary after the investigation heated up.

Bill Richardson Withdraws Nomination as Commerce Secretary Due to Ongoing Investigation

NBC News has reported that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has withdrawn his nomination for the next Commerce Secretary due to an ongoing investigation over whether he exchanged government contracts for campaign contributions, essentially, "pay-to-play." He has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, but said that the on the investigation won't be finished before he has to go to Senate confirmation hearings.

"Let me say unequivocally that I and my administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact," Richardson told NBC News.

"But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process." Barack Obama also told NBC he accepted Richardson's decision to withdraw with "deep regret."

"Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office," Obama said. Source: NBC News

Richardson is withdrawing because of questions raised by federal investigators, who have been looking into whether Richardson and his administration improperly steered state contracts towards CDR Financial Products, a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based firm founded by David Rubin, who is a major financial contributor to Richardson.

In 2003 and 2004, around the time CDR was awarded nearly $1.5 million in state contracts, Rubin and CDR donated $100,000 to Richardson's political action committees. I believe that where is smoke, there is a fire and this isn't close to being resolved. Funny, Bill Richardson wanted the Secretary of State position, knowing that this investigation was a potential threat.
