Althea Ricketts, 62, was charged with aggravated child abuse for beating her son with a computer cable because he was using Facebook without her permission. According to the Daily Mail, Ricketts first found out about her son's account after an acquaintance told her about a disturbing post on his Facebook profile page. Gee, I wonder how old this child is, considering she's 62.
Her son had posted a worrying message which indicated he might try to hurt himself, The Orlando Sentinel reported. In an interview with police, the boy, whose age was not released, said his mother had become angry and beaten him with a cable at their home in Apopka, Florida.
An arrest report states that Ricketts called back and told the woman she'd hit her son and he'd run away from home. He was later found at a friend's home on Try Court with injuries to both arms, police said.
The arresting officer wrote in a report that Ricketts 'stated to me that hitting a child with a cable is a common way of disciplining kids where she comes from.' Ricketts was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. She was booked into the Orange County Jail, and held without bail. Source
I don't quite know what to say, but I do know as a child I was spanked a few times as a form of discipline. The mother shouldn't have beaten the child, but from her age, she's old school and I believe she's from the West Indies and that's common for people in her age group. Is it right? No, but clearly the boy posted something that was very disturbing to her. She could have blocked him from using the Internet, but I am sure he could have set up another Facebook account behind her back.
