Roles black slaves and freed blacks played in the Confederacy crucial, though often menial and under duress, but still remains a touchy subject.

The role of blacks in the Confederacy isn't a subject easily broached. Most civil war historians are in agreement that black slaves and possibly some free blacks played a crucial role in the war by offering their manpower to the South.
