The role of
blacks in the
Confederacy isn't a subject easily broached. Most
civil war historians are in agreement that
black slaves and possibly some
free blacks played a crucial role in the war by offering their manpower to the South. It should be noted, however, this manpower was in the form of menial work done under duress for survival and not out of identification with the
secessionist movement.
