ODU Student Christopher Cummings, Nephew of Rep. Elijah Cummings, Shot & Killed Outside his Norfolk, Va., Home, Another Student Jake Carey Wounded

Old Dominion University student Christopher S. Cummings, nephew of MD Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, shot & killed outside his student rental home in Norfolk, Va., another student, Jake Carey injured.

Christopher S. Cummings, the 20 year old nephew of Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), was shot and killed Friday morning in his Norfolk, Va., apartment, according to media reports. The younger Cummings, a criminal justice major at Old Dominion University, was reportedly shot at a home he shared with several other students, the The Virginian-Pilot said. Another student, Jake Carey, was injured in the shooting as well. Police have said it was a random shooting. The area has had a rash of robberies recently.

"My family and I remain in shock over the news of the random shooting that took the life of my nephew, Christopher," Cummings said in a statement. "Christopher was an amazing young man who was loved and admired by so many people who had the honor of knowing him. An exceptional student with a 3.5 GPA, he had ambitious plans for his future after graduating from Old Dominion." Source

The shooting occurred in an area filled with student rental housing that has been plagued with holdups and home invasions, some committed by students at another area university and Old Dominion as well, the Virginian-Pilot said. This is a sad commentary and we pray the coldblooded murderer is caught and taken off the streets.
