White Ind. man Mark Neal charged with four felonies for slashing black man, Elree Jones, in the face & arm with a knife, but police can't decide if the attack should be classified as a hate crime.
A Chicago man who went to Indiana in search for work ended up having his life changed in a way he never expected. Elree Jones, a black man from Chicago, who went to Indiana in search of work, got the shock of his life on August 30th. According to NBC Chicago, Jones stopped at a Lafayette, Ind., convenience store on a late-night beer run and was slashed in the face by a white man, Mark Neal. He said Neal walked into the store, walked straight toward him and attacked him with a knife, estimated to be about seven inches long."He just slashed my face. I still had my phone in my hand. He slashed my face and I dropped the phone," he said. "After he slashed my face, I was in shock. He kept going, so I was blocking [him]... he slashed me in my arm. Jones was able to get away and ran out the store, but his attacker followed. Jones said he had hatred in his eyes and venom spewing from his mouth. "He mumbled racial slurs... like he'll kill me. 'I'll kill this n****r,'" Jones recalled. SourcePolice used that surveillance video to eventually track down 50-year-old Mark Neal, who's since been charged with four felonies. It is not clear whether the incident will be classified as a hate crime. Well, if you walk up to someone, slash them across the face and call them a n*gger, um, then it's a hate crime. I can't understand what's taking the police so long to figure that out.
