Former U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan Gets Postage Stamp in the USPS Black Heritage Series

Former U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan, first woman & first black to deliver keynote address at a Democratic national convention, has her own postage stamp.

I don't quite know how to take that, since the U.S. Postal Service is literally millions of dollars in the red. In any case, Barbara Jordan's stamp is the 34th in the post office's Black Heritage series. Miss Jordan, who served three terms in the U.S. Congress, became the first woman and first black to deliver a keynote address at a Democratic national convention in 1976. It is ironic that at the time she described Americans as “a people in search of a national community” and said Americans were attempting to create a society “in which all of us are equal.” Gee, I wonder what she would say now about the black community and President Obama. Barbara Jordan never minced words. She was blunt and to the point. We need more firebrands like her!
